Getting Ready...
This week I gathered my pots and potting soil to prepare for my vegetable garden. I am a first-time gardener and have never owned a plant for myself! In all honesty, I used to judge my friends for having plants all over their apartments and freaking out if they weren’t watered enough. Now I’m beginning to understand their behaviors and am so excited to get started on my first gardening journey!
By choosing to embark on this experience, I’m hoping to learn the essentials to first germinating a plant and then being able to upkeep it as it continues to grow. I have never tried planting seeds on my own as I felt clueless and scared by the task. I’m hoping I will be able to successfully germinate the seeds and catch the gardening “green thumb” by the time my semester is complete!
My learning began at Home Depot as I picked out my 5-gallon pots and potting soil. I ended up with 12-inch plastic planters that had pre-made holes in the bottom. Out of concern for water leaking everywhere once I begin to water my plants, I purchased plastic trays for my planters to sit on. I was most surprised by how much potting soil I needed and ended up purchasing 2 large bags to fill up my pots! I love how I’m already learning with each step and am prepared to learn from my upcoming gardening failures (and successes!)
This is my current garden set up in my apartment. My pots are filled with potting soil and are sitting near the south-facing window in my apartment. |
